EzWinScore® Support

PLEASE NOTE: Effective August 10th, the USPSA Match Results and Classification Upload system will NOT accept any data from any version of EzWinScore prior to 4.03. This is necessary to lay the framework for support of some new website functionality that USPSA has planned.

EzWinScore 4.05 is now available. This cumulative maintenance release contains fixes to several problems encountered after the release of EzWinScore version 4.00. You must have at least EzWinScore version 4.00 installed before running this maintenance release update. You do not have to be running any prior release of Version 4. This is considered to be a mandatory upgrade. Click here.

EzWinScore 4.00 is now available on CD. This new version includes many new significant enhancements, including support for USPSA Multigun matches.

Introduction

When the first version of USPSA's EzWinScore was released in 2001, it was produced using a version of Powerbuilder that had been released about the time Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system was released. This newest version of EzWinScore has been produced using the latest version of Powerbuilder and SQL Anywhere to take advantage of the improvements and enhanced functionality that have been introduced in the intervening years.

We've given the program a facelift as well as to eliminate some of the bugs that have been uncovered. In addition, this new version gives clubs the option of running either a USPSA-rules match, or an IPSC-rules match. When a club selects the IPSC region option in the match information (as shown below), the program will strictly comply with IPSC rules. Some of the options that are available under USPSA rules, as a result of rule exceptions granted by the USPSA board of directors, will not be available for this reason.

EzWinScore now fully integrates with the USPSA Self Service Squadding application on uspsa.org. Competitors may be registered in EZWS and uploaded to the web. Squadding selections made by members registered in a given match may be downloaded into EZWS for printing squad lists and labels.

EzWinScore now supports the Palm based scoring system from Auto Scoring Sysems (lingus@acenet.com.au) and 3 Dog Software (www.stagescore.com). These are commercial products that allow range officers to enter handgun match scores in Palm-brand PDS's and transfer the results directly to EzWinScore. For now, only handgun matches (not 3-gun or multi-gun) are supported. Detailed documentation on setting up your Palm™ devices to work with The AutoScoringSysgtems program is available here. Instructions on Stagescore are available on www.stagescore.com

Additional information on what is new in EzWinScore 4.0 may be found here.

Supported operating systems

The supported operating systems for EzWinScore 4.0 are Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Please note there are considerations to be taken into account when installing EzWinScore on Windows Vista or Windows 7, please see the applicable section further on down this page.

EzWinScore version 4.00 cannot be installed on any Windows operating system prior to Windows 2000. Most modern software compilers no longer create programs for these older DOS-based operating systems because of the shift to Unicode-enabled operating systems.

Installation and upgrade information

You may install EzWinScore 4.x as a new addition to your computer, or you can install over the top of and upgrade an existing installation of 3.x or even 2.x (though absolutely no one should still be running 2.x).

It is suggested that users make an archive copy of their match files, including the system database named masternames.db, to a recordable CD-R disk or USB key for backup purposes. It is not necessary to save copies of uspsaclasses.db, infofile.db, match.db, emptymatch.db or newmasternames.db. All of these database files have been updated to a newer format and will be installed with EzWinScore version 4.00.

In addition to the new system databases, previous match databases you have saved may need to be converted. Should you open a match file created with any previous version of EzWinScore, the program will determine the appropriate conversion routine to run. After conversion, you will be offered a chance to delete the old file and its registry entries. This is recommended if you have created a backup copy of your match files.

Your masternames database will also be converted when the program runs for the first time after installation. Should you find it necessary to restore a backup copy, or you receive a masternames database from another club member, the program will again check the database version and convert it if necessary.

EzWinscore 4.x will be the last version to be able to read and convert 2.x match files. if you have old 2.x match files that you ever wish to use again, we recommend you set some time aside one day to go through the conversion process with each of them in turn.

Installing on Windows Vista or Windows 7

Windows Vista and Windows 7 present a new set of considerations with its restrictive user privileges for installing and running EzWinScore.

USPSA does not recommend installing any version of EzWinScore in the "Program Files" folder of computers running any version of Windows Vista or Windows 7. These operating systems include mulitple layers of security software that prevents the program from functioning in a normal fashion IF it is installed in c:\Program Files. As a result, the default installation folder for EzWinScore 4.x is now c:\USPSA\EzWinScore.

You must install EzWinScore (and most anything else, for that matter) using an administrator level userid. Even then, when you insert the EzWinScore cd-rom in your computer, you will get additional questions asked before setup runs because the operating system does not recognize the software publisher, which is USPSA. As illustrated above, just click on "Run setup.exe" and then click on "Allow" on the User Account Control window that appears next. Setup will then proceed normally.

After installing the base EzWinScore version, you must then install the subsequent and necessary cumulative upgrade on your Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer. Starting with Version 4.05, the EzWinScore setup program makes the necessary modification to both the desktop icon and the start menu entry so that the program will run in "administrator" mode. This is so that you can create new match files as desired in the process of scoring your matches. If EzWinScore is not set to run "as administrator", then it cannot read or write to a newly-created match file, even though it can create it. (Go figure.) This issue is addressed in Version 4.05 and above.

IPSC matches and IPSC Classifications

As mentioned above, version 4 includes the ability to create and score matches that strictly comply with the IPSC rules. Just as with a USPSA match, users will be able to select any of the current IPSC classifier stages during stage setup. Reporting results from IPSC classifier matches is accomplished in much the same way a club reports USPSA classifier scores. The major exception is that the ONLY method for submitting IPSC classifiers will be through the USPSA web site and the classifier uploading feature. PRINTED REPORTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. The upload file will be prefaced with IPSC_ to differentiate between a USPSA classifier submission and an IPSC classifier submission. See the Help file for additional information.

USPSA Classification Updates

This version of EzWinScore has an improved routine for updating classifications in current matches. EzWinScore version 4 will do a more thorough check of membership numbers to catch those instances where the member's prefix has changed. EzWinScore 4 will also update competitors' member number prefixes in masternames.db as they change, as well as update classifications. (It won't update prefixes in a match file, so a suggested good practice is to update masternames.db first, and then register people in your match.) It still does not have the ability to update classifications if the member has changed to a different membership series. e.g. going from annual to life, or life to benefactor.

Distribution

CDs for EzWinScore version 4.00 were mailed out to all affiliated clubs in May 2010. You can purchase an EzWinScore CD through the USPSA store for $25. EZWS 4.0 represents a significant improvement to previous versions of the program. Given the nature of the system, it's not possible to create a downloadable update that we can put on the web site. At least for now, the CD is your only option for obtaining and installing the program.

As with any other commercial software program, once you install the program from the CD, you should then install the latest available updates to the program from the vendor website. EzWinScore is no different in that regard, and the latest update to the program is available here.

Problem Reporting

As with any software, despite extensive testing, there likely are problems that haven't surfaced at this writing. If you discover one of them, please contact Roger Maier at roger@uspsa.org, or call 360-855-2245. USPSA will use your suggestions to improve the program and will make the resulting updates available at uspsa.org.

Thank You

USPSA would like to thank the development team of Roger Maier, Rob Boudrie, Bill Noyes, Tom Neal, Scott Chapman, Tom Dings, Bruce Braxton, and Pete Carstensen for their valuable help with testing and debugging version 4 of EzWinScore®.
